People look for songs that reflect the artists personality completely. A song will never be at full potential if it were made aiming for likes. The song ends up emotionless, which causes people avoiding the song. People don't care if your style changes. As long as the music reflects who you are, people will listen to the music.
Ur not supposed to make tracks for the follower's sake in the first place. The most popular artists are ones that aim to improve by being their best nonetheless of follows or likes. The reason they're so popular, is cuz they make the music THEY believe is their best by putting their solo personality into their songs. They improve themselves with their OWN personality, giving them FULL ownership of their songs.
