you got the right idea.. just throw more into the midi, hammer ons and stuff, you can play the synth and wub just like an instrument. just have to wrap your head around the idea of.. it being on a computer..
When your making lofi without using the loops, a good place to start is the gm-2 piano. Pianos are used in a lot of lofi so if you made a calming melodie on a piano with some drums, it would be really good. To use the gm-2 piano just go to the gm-2 instrument and click on the option for yamaha grand piano or any of the many other ones that are there.
